Humble Beginnings 12/31/24

Rose and Alvin Parker had another baby girl, Josephine.  Rose continued to work in Law Enforcement, obtaining several more promotions.  Alvin also scored several promotions, while also running the diner most days.  It's now at level 8 and has been expanded a bit.  By the end of summer, Dominique is a teen and has started dating James Edwards, and Josephine is a child.  Though the couple has tried for another baby several times, they've been unsuccessful; they seem to be experiencing some fertility issues.  At the end of the round, they have $7015.

Humble Beginnings 12/30/24

The Gordons welcomed another baby boy, Zane, followed by a third son named Chad.  During her third pregnancy, Amaya had such a tough time that she had to quit her job.  It will certainly be more difficult to level up with only one income (especially with three growing boys to feed), but Amaya plans to work on her painting so that maybe she can make some extra cash from home.  (She has 7 creativity points, so she just needs one more to be able to sell paintings.)  In the meantime, Eric has been rather successful in his career, which allowed them to buy the things they needed, as well as pay the bills/rent/crime syndicate.  At the end of summer, they have $1338 and will remain Working Class.  Scott is nearly a teen, Zane is a child, and Chad will become a toddler at the start of fall.

Things have really improved for Levi Carter this summer.  He started his week by doing some bartending on his days off.  While working the bar, he met Phoebe Zhang.  Though he'd had a brief fling with Angela Owens, he knew that wasn't going anywhere and so decided to ask Phoebe out.  She accepted and they had a great time.  Things progressed between them, and she moved in towards the end of summer; when they discovered she was pregnant, they got married right away.  Phoebe moved in with $7000, which was more than enough for a promotion to Working Class.  In addition, she had a job in Science (which, per my rules, she could keep if she had the required starting skills for the job), but her LTW is for Politics.  A job in Politics requires a Uni degree, but since she was already employed in Science (which also requires a Uni degree) it stands to reason that she's already earned a degree, so I'm giving her credit for that.  She was unable to find a job in Politics, but I'll let her switch as soon as possible.  Meanwhile, Levi decided to get a degree as well, since he had earned a scholarship in high school.  He doesn't need it for his LTW of Culinary but having it will allow him to study from the bookcase, as well as teach his children to study and take vacation days, so it seems like a good idea.  Levi was also wildly successful in his job this round, scoring several chance card promotions and a $10,000 bonus!  Consequently, with a savings of $26,770 (after paying all expenses), Levi and Phoebe will be moving directly to Lower Middle Class.

Humble Beginnings 12/28/24

The Franklins had a mixed bag of luck this round.  Charlotte, Xavier, Irene, and Isaac all got several promotions, earning a tidy sum for the family.  Alex grew into adulthood and took a job as a pickpocket which, sadly, cost him his life on day one.  He had recently become engaged to his high school sweetheart, Wendy Owens, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.  Irene also got engaged, to Wendy's older brother Brandon, who I didn't think would want to settle down, but maybe he's changed his mind?  The original plan was to simply sway Irene and Wendy, but with Alex's death and the fact that Irene got pregnant and delivered a son, Austin, I decided that Irene and Brandon will move into their own place with their son.  Brandon can't stand his mother and, now that Wendy's an adult, she can take over keeping the family afloat, as Brandon has his own little family to care for now.  By the end of summer, the family had saved $13,685, of which they gave Irene $5000, meaning both they and Irene will be moving up to Working.

Humble Beginnings 12/27/24

Angela Owens is still struggling to make ends meet.  The job prospects have been terrible; she was lucky to find a Culinary job the day before she became an elder.  She has reached the level of waitress with the help of Levi Carter's chess board (she's become VERY friendly with him).  Brandon also took a job in Culinary and is now working as a drive thru clerk.  He started dating Irene Franklin, but also Meadow Pederson, and possibly Marie Rauscher in the near future.  I think it's safe to assume he's not planning on settling down any time soon.  Wendy was briefly able to take a teen job before she grew up into an adult; her LTW is Slacker, but the only thing available was...you guessed it...Culinary!  She'll keep looking.  As a teen, she also became romantically involved with Alex Franklin, so we'll have to see where that goes once he ages up as well.  All the other girls have aged up also - Amanda and Vanessa are teens, and Jennifer is a child.  At the end of summer, the family has $3531 in savings, which means they're still Poverty.

Humble Beginnings 12/24/24

Things were starting to look up for Paul and Linda Edwards, until Paul made a decision that ruined it all.  Paul was beginning to have some success as a criminal (he got promoted to bagman), but then his wandering eye landed on Angela Owens.  One day, while everyone was at work/school, he took things to the next level with Angela.  Unfortunately, Linda ended up coming home early that day, thanks to a bad day at work which resulted in her demotion.  She was absolutely furious with Paul and no amount of pleading would sway her; Paul was relegated to the couch until the end of summer and, when he was arrested and convicted once again (despite spending the $5000 that would have leveled them up to Working on his lawyer), Linda had had enough of him and filed for divorce.  With only $1333 left, she and her kids will be remaining Poverty.  Luckily, the boys are teens now (with jobs in Slacker) and Rachel will soon be one as well, so there's still hope they'll level up eventually.  (Note: Paul will be spending nine days in jail, as he obtained one more promotion to bookie before the end of the round, and when his sentence is finished, he'll either move in with Angela or become Homeless, as it didn't seem right to me to give him half of the $1333 under the circumstances.)

Humble Beginnings 12/22/24

Emily Baxter started dating Ratna Siew (aka Mr. Big) after her split from Dalton, but even though she rolled wants for him during dates, she also kept rolling the want to fall in love with Dalton (despite them now having negative chemistry) and after every date, she'd roll the want for three first dates.  To me, this was an indication that she wasn't that into Ratna and considered him as a fling or a revenge type of thing, so I didn't have her move him in.  She did, however, end up pregnant with his child (a boy, Joshua, who is now a toddler).  Ratna called her incessantly, asking for more dates, even though she wasn't rolling anything but skill/job wants, and it became almost stalker-y, so I think she's going to move on; there's another sim, Alvin Lum, who she has two bolts for that I'll have her ask out next round.  Dylan somehow lost all chemistry he had for Nicole Tang, who he'd been dating, and then he grew up and almost immediately fell in love (autonomously) with a townie named Rose Nanale, for whom he has two bolts.  I guess he just outgrew his teen infatuation for Nicole, which sucks for her, but it is what it is.  I had him move Rose in (she came with $2000 and a job in Culinary) and she got pregnant right away.  By the end of summer, they had saved $28,929, which will promote them to Lower Middle Class.  I do have a bit of a dilemma with Rose, however, as her LTW is for Business, which she can't go into without a University degree.  My rules state that a sim must move to the University campus to obtain the degree, but given that she's already in a serious relationship, with a baby on the way, it doesn't seem feasible that she'd want to move to campus, so I'm considering revising the rules to allow for all degrees to be obtained off campus if desired.

Humble Beginnings 12/21/24

Michelle Tang reached adulthood and headed off to college to study Medicine (her parents gave her $10,000 for tuition/living expenses); she'll be returning afterwards to take over this household.  Meanwhile, Nicole grew into a teen and took a job in Athletics; her LTW is for Entertainment, which will not require a degree.  She also began dating Dylan Baxter (who is technically her second cousin - their mothers, Andrea and Emily, are first cousins) and will likely move into his household when she ages up.  Robi is getting close to becoming Hall of Famer and Andrea was a little more successful in her job as well, despite becoming an elder.  She's also doing well with her flower arranging; she'll soon have a gold badge.  After bills and property taxes, they have $19,385.

Humble Beginnings 12/17/24

The Andrews/Carter/Cormier family has come a long way since they started out Homeless.  Clay and Paige have done exceptionally well in the Culinary field, Lily is holding her own in Athletic, and Ricky is doing well with Slacker.  When Ethan grew into a teen, he too took a job in the Entertainment industry, obtaining a promotion early on.  His LTW is to go into Politics, so he'll need a University degree for that.  Luckily, the family has more than enough money to afford his tuition, as Paige brought in a whopping $20,000 bonus!  In other news, Lily and Ricky had another baby, Mason, who became a toddler by the end of spring, while his older sister Daisy is now a child, soon to be a teen.  At the end of the round, the family has saved $54,502 after paying bills and the crime syndicate (I didn't make them pay the rent, as they'll be moving out), which means they are now Lower Middle Class.

Humble Beginnings 12/15/24

The new family (Harris) consists of a teenage girl, Kayla, and her toddler brother, Simon.  They moved into the abandoned warehouse, starting out as Poverty.  I had been counting on Kayla being able to ask her neighbors to "watch kids" while she was at school/work, but evidently teens can't do that, so she had a very rough time.  She did some begging and some fishing (once Simon became a child and she could take him to a community lot) and eventually got a job in Slacker.  She was sometimes able to pay the nanny and sometimes not, but by the end of spring she had to cash in her meager savings, which was not nearly enough to pay the rent or the crime syndicate; consequently, the Harris family will be demoted to Homeless and Kayla will pay everything she has ($57) to the crime syndicate (plus be unable to work for one day, but it won't really be an issue because she'll be homeless and jobless lol).  Since she did become an adult by the end of the round, she should have things a bit easier, despite losing status.

Humble Beginnings 12/14/24

Adam and Linda Edwards moved into their new apartment with their young daughter Amy.  They had few furnishings and little money after paying the initial rent, but they were both lucky enough to find jobs as golf caddies.  They were very successful throughout the week, attaining several promotions each and having another baby (Luke) along the way.  At the end of spring the kids were aged child and toddler, respectively and Adam and Linda had saved up $7292 after rent, bills, and the crime payment.

Humble Beginnings 12/13/24

Levi Carter moved into the motel with very little cash.  He immediately moved his fiancé Lucy in, and they were married in short order.  Levi continued working in the fast-food industry, while Lucy worked on gaining the skills necessary to get a job.  Unfortunately, the only job that became available to her was in the Criminal career.  She was okay for a while but then got arrested and sent to jail. Upon returning home, she picked up where she left off and was even successful enough to gain a promotion.  That's where her luck ran out, however, as she did not return home on the last day of spring.  (As she was still employed in Criminal on the last day of the round, I allowed Levi to skip paying the crime syndicate, even though she technically died before I finished playing.)  Levi will shoulder on alone with a savings balance of $2058, after paying bills/rent.

Rose and Alvin (Parker) got married as soon as they moved in and just before their baby girl (Dominique) was born.  Rose considered quitting the police force to work full-time at the diner, but she was loath to give up her substantial paycheck, especially since Alvin has been doing so well running the place during the day and working nights at the convenience store.  They decided to maintain the status quo.  By the end of spring the business is up to rank 6, Rose has obtained several promotions and become pregnant again, and Dominique is a child.  After paying their property taxes and spending a bit of money on the house, they have $5166 saved up.  They have a long way to go before reaching Upper Middle Class, but they're comfortable in the meantime.

Humble Beginnings 12/12/24

The Franklins got settled back into their warehouse apartment and immediately started searching for jobs.  Adeline, Charlotte, and Irene found jobs as dishwashers; Xavier started working the streets as a pickpocket, but Isaac discovered he wasn't qualified for anything and decided to keep escorting.  It was tough at first, but ultimately, they began to make some progress.  Xavier got arrested once, but his public defender got him off the hook.  He was scared straight after that and found a job as a golf caddy.  Irene and Isaac also took jobs in Slacker (though Isaac continues to escort as well), and Irene started writing a cookbook, using the old computer she found in the former office of the warehouse.  New baby, Caleb, was born and, sadly, Adeline passed away shortly after at the age of 74.  Alex became friends with Wendy Owens, and she brought her older brother Brandon with her one day when she came to visit.  Irene and Brandon have some chemistry, so something might develop there in the future.  By the end of spring, the boys were aged teen, child, and toddler, and the family's savings totaled $3056 after rent/bills/crime payment, keeping them in Poverty for the time being.

Eric and Amaya Gordon moved into their new apartment and Amaya immediately found a job as a team mascot.  Eric's dream has always been to enter the field of gaming, so he decided to enroll in community college.  Amaya was happy to support their little family, which soon grew to include baby Scott, while her husband focused on his studies.  Luckily, Eric was able to find a job in gaming as soon as he finished his degree program.  The tuition, however, took quite a toll on their savings, not to mention the added expense of a nanny once Eric started working.  At the end of spring, they have just $904 after paying their bills, rent, and the crime syndicate, and Amaya is pregnant with their second child.  Hopefully they'll be able to attain some promotions come summer in order to keep their heads above water.

Humble Beginnings 12/7/24

Paul and Linda Edwards continued to plug along this spring.  Neither got too far on their job progress and they had another baby (a girl, Rachel), which means another mouth to feed as well.  On top of that, Paul was arrested again and is currently residing in prison, while Linda holds down the fort on her own at home.  At the end of spring, the boys are children and Rachel is a toddler, and the family has saved $3145 after paying rent and bills.  Therefore, they'll be remaining Poverty.

The struggles continued for the Owens family.  Warren was unable to get promoted in his new job, which meant bringing in very little income.  Brandon got fired from his job, and Angela was unable to get a job at all.  Angela gave birth to another little girl, Vanessa, and then found herself pregnant once again, but this time her husband was not the father - it was one of her clients.  Warren will never find out, however, as shortly after the baby (Jennifer) was born, he accidentally set himself on fire while making crepes suzette and died before the firefighters could get to him.  Brandon had originally decided to move out upon reaching adulthood, but in the wake of his stepfather's death, and with his mother to soon become an elder with no income and four daughters to support, he felt he should stay and try to take care of the family.  At the end of spring Wendy has become a teen, Amanda and Vanessa are children, and Jennifer is still an infant.  The family has $1330 in savings after rent, bills, and the crime payment, so they'll remain Poverty.

Humble Beginnings 12/2/24

The Dalton/Baxter household has undergone some changes this spring.  The relationship between Dalton and Emily became stale and, consequently, Dalton began having an affair with Danielle Lillard, who he'd met when living in the motel.  They had an instant spark of chemistry, and Dalton knew that Danielle, not Emily, was the woman he was meant to spend his life with.  He stayed long enough to see his son reach teen, so that Emily would not have to shoulder the financial burden of a babysitter and then moved out to marry Danielle (something he, nor Emily, have ever rolled a want for), who is pregnant with his child.  Financially, they did very well this round, scoring several promotions, as well as a sizable bonus on Emily's part.  I had Dalton take half the family's savings (after paying the bills and crime payment), plus Danielle's $16,000, for a total of $35,363, which levels them up to Lower Middle Class.  Emily kept the other half of their savings and paid the rent out of it, leaving her with $16,466; she will remain Working Class and Dylan will remain here with her.  I reasoned that since they were both equally responsible for the bills/crime payment, Dalton should pay his half, but the rent is for the following week, during which he'll no longer live here, so that should be her responsibility alone.

Humble Beginnings 12/1/24

With the loss of Karen at age 68, the Baxter/Tang branch of the family has lost its last Baxter.  Karen really did well in her life, considering she started off Homeless and made it all the way to Lower Middle Class before she died.  Robi continues to thrive in the Athletic career, while Andrea continues to stall in Slacker.  Once Michelle became a teen, she took a job in Law Enforcement (and reached the top by the end of spring), though her LTW is for Medicine, so she's definitely planning to go to University.  She also started dating a townie boy named Korey Welsh.  By the end of the round, Nicole had grown into childhood and the family's savings totaled $23,385 after property taxes/bills.

Humble Beginnings 11/30/24

The Andrews/Carter family had a very successful spring.  Lily moved her boyfriend Ricky in and almost immediately after became pregnant, eventually delivering a baby girl named Daisy.  Ricky got a Slacker job (which is his LTW) and all the adults earned several promotions during the course of the week.  They did so well, in fact, that they were able to give Ryan the full tuition ($6000) needed for University.  He reached adulthood by the end of spring and moved to campus to earn a Law degree; he will also be working in the Military while going to school to build up funds for his own household.  (Note:  Since I haven't played Uni yet, it's still a little bit flexible.  I'll be playtesting and figuring things out as I go.  For now, I'm considering Ryan to still be part of his parents' household until he leaves Uni {so that I don't have to worry about his class level, savings, or paying the crime syndicate} but I'll determine his class when he finishes his degree based on the money he has earned while there.)  At the end of spring, Clay and Paige are both elders, Ethan is a child, and little Daisy is a toddler.  Their savings total $9429 after bills/rent, crime payment, and Ryan's tuition.

Humble Beginnings 11/27/24

The new family is just a single sim - Eric Gordon.  Eric started out as Poverty Class, living in the motel.  He had a very tough winter; he was unable to get the skills needed to apply for any jobs until close to the end of the week, he was always in a terrible mood which prevented him from even doing much bartending, once he did have the skills he needed the jobs just didn't come up, and the only bright spot was meeting Amaya Louie, who he fell for pretty quickly.  Amaya, quite literally, saved him as he was on the verge of becoming Homeless; she agreed to move in and brought $15,000 with her on the very last day of the round.  She's unemployed, but has a decent skill set so she won't have any trouble finding a job.  They got married right away and with the $14,565 they have remaining after paying the crime syndicate, they will be moving up to Working Class.

Humble Beginnings 11/26/24

The Franklins spent a tough winter on the Homeless lot.  However, with the twins newly grown to adulthood, it meant plenty of sims to beg and/or care for little Alex, who soon became a big brother to Riley, who will soon also become a big brother, as Charlotte is pregnant once more.  Aside from begging, they caught a few boots at the beginning of winter, before the pool froze over, and Xavier tried his hand at growing tomatoes, but they didn't survive the snow and ice.  By the end of the season, the family had saved $505, so will be leveling back up to Poverty in the spring.  (Side note: it seems as though Romance sims make more money when begging.  Xavier and Isaac seemed to get tipped more often and for more money than the others - just an observation.)

Humble Beginnings 11/25/24

The Owens family continues to struggle under the weight of poverty.  Once the baby was born (a girl, Wendy), Angela briefly took a job as a pickpocket, but when she found out she was pregnant yet again, she and Warren decided it was too dangerous, and she gave up her life of crime.  Not being able to contribute was upsetting to her though, so she took up escorting again in secret.  Warren scours the newspaper daily for a position in Slacker (his LTW), but to no avail, so he's still working in Culinary.  He's been promoted (and demoted) several times, ending the winter as a fast-food shift manager.  At the end of winter, Brandon is a teen (with a job as a gas station attendant), Wendy is a child, new baby Amanda is still an infant, and there's another baby on the way.  Brandon does not get along with his parents at all, so it's unlikely he'll want to stay and help out once he grows up; he'll want to get out as soon as he can, which means they may be stuck in this class for a while longer.  Current savings, after rent, bills, and the crime payment, are $1583.

Humble Beginnings 11/24/24

The Edwards family faced many challenges and changes this winter.  Alice got a job as a golf caddy right away, but her sons were not so lucky.  Adam wasted no time in proposing to his waitress girlfriend (Linda Cho) and they were married with a baby on the way in short order.  Paul, not to be outdone by his brother, decided to give up escorting to marry one of his clients, Linda Barthelet.  (Yes, we now have two Linda Edwards.)  In addition, he finally found a job working for the syndicate as a pickpocket; his new bride had a job as a fast-food worker.  Adam and his Linda remained unemployed but took barista and bartending gigs whenever possible.  In due time, baby Amy was born and, shortly thereafter, three things occurred: 1. Paul's Linda discovered she was pregnant, 2. Alice died at age 73, and 3. Paul was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to jail time, despite having spent his wife's life savings on an attorney.  Now, my original plan, since both Lindas brought in $5000, was to level everyone up, but have the brothers each take half the money and go their separate ways, moving into their own individual Working Class apartments.  However, since they spent $5K on Paul's legal fees, there wasn't enough for them each to have the minimum requirement for Working, which would mean them all moving into an apartment together.  This did not seem reasonable to me because the brothers dislike each other and, without their mother's presence to keep the peace, would likely not want to do that.  So, I decided that Adam will take his wife's savings and level up his family, while leaving Paul's wife at the motel to await his return from prison.  Therefore, Adam, Linda, and Amy are now Working Class, with $5000, and Paul, Linda, and the twins (James and Joseph) Linda delivered, will remain Poverty Class with $1684 in savings after paying the rent.  Paul's family might level up next round, and it might not work out so well for Adam's family, given that neither he, nor his wife, are employed, but I guess that's what we'll find out lol!

Humble Beginnings 11/22/24

Dalton Duncan decided to switch jobs to Culinary, even though it meant taking a pay cut.  He's done very well so far, so maybe the sacrifice was worth it.  Emily continues to work in Culinary as well; she's a bit ahead of Dalton due to her head start.  Unluckily though, it seems as though their schedules always seem to line up, meaning that they have to spend quite a bit of money on nannies to care for their son Dylan.  It's taking a real toll on their bank account.  Thankfully, Dylan will become a teen in the spring, and there's been no sign of another baby on the horizon, so they may have a chance to get ahead finally.  Their savings as of the end of winter is $6710.

Humble Beginnings 11/20/24

The Baxter/Tang family has gone through even more changes this winter.  Robi decided to change jobs and began working in the Athletic career.  Karen and Steven continued in Culinary, while Andrea continued with Slacker (though she's had very little success with promotions).  Rose took a job as a security guard but also bought a small community lot and started a business, Rosie's Diner, on it.  Steven passed away at age 63, leaving the family a tidy sum in life insurance money.  Andrea began making flower bouquets for extra cash and she and Robi also welcomed another baby girl, Nicole.  Rose began dating Alvin Parker and decided to ask him to move in (he brought $14,000); he subsequently proposed to her, and she said yes.  They are now expecting their first child as well.  Alvin took a job in the Military, but was fired on the first day, so he ended up working in Slacker instead.  He has also taken on the primary responsibility of running the diner since Rose is pregnant.  By the end of the round, the house was getting pretty crowded, so I decided to move Rose and Alvin into their own place.  Since Rose has a business, however, which she can only keep if she remains Lower Middle Class, I had her take $25,000 with her, which leaves the family with $10,732 after paying their property taxes and bills.  Normally, I would've been okay with giving her less money and allowing her to level down a class, but I felt the circumstances warranted giving her more, and Alvin did bring in $14,000, so it made sense to me.  Had the family been close to leveling up to Upper Middle Class, it might have been different, but they're nowhere near the $100,000 they need for that so...

Humble Beginnings 11/18/24

The Andrews/Carter clan settled into their new home in the Working Class row houses I built, minus Travis who, sadly, died in prison at age 68.  The twins got jobs to help with the family's finances, and Clay and Paige continued working in Culinary (both were promoted up to host/hostess by the end of the round).  Levi began dating a girl named Lucy Do and Lily fell for Ricky Cormier.  Paige got pregnant and subsequently delivered another boy, Ethan, shortly before Ryan grew into a teen.  When the twins reached adulthood, I allowed them to take their romantic interests to Uni with them to grow them up, before moving them back home.  (I left Lucy and Ricky on the Uni lot to potentially be moved in later.)  Levi earned a $1000 scholarship for good grades, but he likely will not be using it, as his Lifetime Want is for Culinary, and he doesn't need a degree for that.  Upon returning home, he immediately found a position as a dishwasher.  Lily's LTW is for Athletic, which is allowed for Working Class, so she took a job as a team mascot.  (Btw, they both met the skill requirements for these jobs.)  Ryan also took a teen job in the Athletic career (I'm not requiring any skills for teen jobs) and his LTW is for Law, which is a bit trickier, as he'll need a University degree to work in that job.  I am going to try to send him if the family can swing the initial $1000 for his first class; he'll likely have to work his way through college on his own after that.  At the end of winter, after paying the crime syndicate and the rent/bills, the family only had enough money to give each of the twins $1000 upon moving out, which would automatically demote them to Poverty.  I decided that, since Levi wants Culinary anyway, which is allowed in Poverty, while Lily's Athletic job is not, I would have him move out with his $1000 but keep Lily in the current household.  Levi will become Poverty and move Lucy in with him (they got engaged btw) and Lily will move Ricky in here and take over the household once her parents are gone (they'll both become elders next round).  As of the end of winter, they have $1077 and will remain Working Class.

Humble Beginnings 11/12/24

The Franklin family is comprised of elder matriarch Adeline, her son Xavier, her deceased daughter's teen twins Irene and Isaac, and Xavier's wife Charlotte.  They began at Poverty Class and moved into an old warehouse that has been converted into tenement apartments.  Adeline and the teens all got jobs initially, but Irene was fired, not once, but twice without ever bringing home a paycheck.  Adeline and Isaac managed to earn a little money, and by the end of fall Xavier had taken a job with the crime syndicate to avoid paying protection money.  Charlotte was never able to find a job she was qualified for, but did find herself pregnant, nearly starving to death before finally giving birth to a baby boy, Alex.  By the end of the round, the family was unable to pay their rent (even with their $50 savings) so they've been demoted to Homeless Class and will be moving to the residential homeless lot beginning in winter (perfect timing, right?), where they will begin with $292.

Humble Beginnings 11/11/24

Angela Baxter moved into her own unit at the motel and her fiancé, Warren Owens, moved in with her.  If she was expecting to get lucky like her sister Andrea did with her $19K barista boyfriend, she was quickly disappointed, as Warren brought in a whopping $1.  Angela began working as a golf caddy right away.  After her son Brandon was born, she and Warren finally tied the knot.  Eventually, Warren found a job as a dishwasher and was later promoted up to fast food shift manager.  Angela was not so lucky.  Her second pregnancy was very difficult, and she had a hard time at work, resulting in her being fired towards the end of fall.  There was a small bit of luck though - they got a genie lamp!  At the end of the round, the Owens family has saved $907 after bills, rent, and the crime syndicate payment.

Paul managed to score several good dates this fall and, in conjunction with the boots caught and sold by the family, they saved up just enough to level up to Poverty Class come winter.  Sadly, Dorothy will not be joining them, as she died at age 67.  Alice has a little time left, however, and she's looking forward to having a roof over her head again.  If only she could get her sons to stop fighting, she'd be able to die a happy woman.  (I don't think she's going to get her wish.)

Humble Beginnings 11/8/24

Fall brought both joy and sadness to the Duncan family.  Finlay and Fiona both passed away (at ages 70 and 72, respectively), but not before both reached the top of their elder jobs, bringing in a tidy sum for the family coffers.  Dalton was promoted up to home video editor and Emily to hostess.  They also welcomed a new family member, baby Dylan, who was born just after Fiona died.  By the end of fall, their savings totaled $10,453 (after paying the syndicate), so they will be promoted to Working Class in the winter.

Humble Beginnings 11/7/24

Steven eventually returned home from prison to find the family greatly changed from when he left.  One of his daughters (Angela) had moved out, as well as one of his nieces (Emily).  His other daughter (Andrea) had gotten married (to Robi Tang) and was expecting a baby.  The first thing he did upon arriving home was to look for a job (he found one in Culinary).  His teen niece Rose also took a job in Culinary, and Robi and Andrea both took Slacker jobs.  Their baby was born shortly after Steven's return - a girl named Michelle - and she was a toddler by the end of fall.  Rose grew into an adult on the last day.  At the end of fall the family's savings totaled $29,824, thanks to Robi bringing in $19,000 when he moved in.  (I have never had an NPC bring in so much money, which is why I made the rule about moving in only NPCs vs. townies, but since it seems they can have just as much cash as townies, I've revised the rule to allow anyone to move in as long as they are played as part of the family and not just for their cash.)  Since the family has over $25,000, they will be leveling up, not to Working Class, but straight to Lower Middle Class.

Humble Beginnings 11/5/24

The Andrews/Carver family has been through a number of ups and downs this fall.  Clay continued to work in the Culinary field, and Paige was able to join him when she also took a position as a dishwasher.  Travis returned home from prison and found himself very drawn to Jenna.  After a whirlwind romance, they tied the knot, but the very next day Jenna died while working the streets.  The family continued to struggle forward, even though the twins were constantly fighting, and they had to spend precious funds to hire a nanny to watch baby Ryan while they all worked.  Once Levi and Lily grew into teens, things started looking up a bit, only for Travis to be arrested once again.  At this point, a tough decision had to be made.  They had the money to hire a lawyer, which might have allowed Travis to beat the charges against him, but it would have meant the family could not level up to Working Class.  Since Travis was not likely to live much longer anyway, it seemed the best decision was to roll the dice with the public defender and allow the family to keep their nest egg.  Travis was subsequently convicted and sentenced to what will amount to life in prison for him.  By the end of fall, he was still alive and employed, so he was able to qualify the family for one last exemption from the crime syndicate payment - his final gift to them.  At the end of fall, the twins are teens and Ryan is a child, both Clay and Paige continue to work in Culinary (though she's been more successful than he has), and they've saved a total of $7620, which makes them officially Working Class.

Humble Beginnings 11/2/24

The newest family to the neighborhood consists of an elderly couple, Alice and Dorothy Edwards, and their two grown sons Adam and Paul.  The rolled Homeless for their starting class and have moved into the residential homeless lot.  Alice and Dorothy have primarily been fishing, though the heat is really getting to everyone.  "The Boys" do not get along at all and are constantly bickering.  They can't even agree on how to fund their way out of homelessness; Paul is taking the escort route (though he hasn't been very successful), but Adam feels it's better to just romance one woman, move her in, and utilize her life savings (has hasn't been very successful either because, although he's made friends with a waitress, without a phone he's unable to invite her over or take her on a date).  In any event, the family managed to save $359 after bills, so it looks good for them to level up in the fall.

Humble Beginnings 10/31/24

The Duncans had a pretty successful week.  They all got hired as golf caddies and, by the end of the week, the elders had all been promoted to gas station attendants, while Dalton had reached record store clerk.  Sadly, Greenlee passed away at the age of 66, but on a happier note, Dalton began dating Emily Baxter and she moved in and got a job in Culinary at the end of the week.  Both Finlay and Fiona will likely pass on before the end of fall, but Dalton and Emily have a pretty good start on making it to Working Class with a total savings (after paying the rent and the crime syndicate) of $3612.

Humble Beginnings 10/30/24

The summer took a toll on the Baxter family.  Steven began immediately working shifts as a barista and bartending as well.  Karen continued begging until she landed a job as a dishwasher; she has since been promoted to drive through clerk.  Since Andrea was not qualified for any jobs, she stuck with begging, while Sarah and Angela both continued escorting.  When Bryan reached adulthood, he took a job as a pickpocket...with disastrous consequences.  He failed to return from his very first day out on the streets (he rolled death).  With the crime syndicate breathing down their necks, Sarah decided to take Bryan's place in "the family" by taking a Criminal job.  She was a bit more successful, attaining a promotion to bagman, before meeting the same fate as he did.  After his sister's death, Steven took the reins, also gaining a promotion to bagman but, unfortunately, getting arrested in the process; he'll have to spend some time in jail, but at least he's alive.  Meanwhile, Andrea met a barista named Robi and began dating him; Angela got pregnant by one of her clients, fell in love with a different client (the cuisine hobby lot director, Warren Owens), and decided to give up escorting to marry him.  She moved out at the end of summer, taking $500 of the family's savings (just enough to keep her Poverty Class), and will be moving into an empty unit at the motel.  By the end of summer Emily and Rose had both grown up as well (to adult and teen, respectively) and the family has a total of $3050 heading into fall.

Humble Beginnings 10/28/24

The Andrews/Carver clan moved into a motel and, no sooner did they get settled, than Paige gave birth to twins, Levi and Lily.  Travis immediately began working as a pickpocket and was arrested on his first day.  Since they didn't have any money for a lawyer, he ended up behind bars.  In the meantime, Clay found a job as a dishwasher, as well as taking barista and bartending shifts whenever possible, while Paige continued begging in between caring for the babies.  Jenna grew up and also began working as a pickpocket, though she was much more successful at eluding the cops; she even got promoted to bagman!  Travis returned home once his sentence was finished, but was subsequently picked up again, landing him back in jail...again.  By the end of summer, the twins had grown into childhood and the family had saved $2129.  Jenna briefly considered moving out, but decided they'd have a better chance of getting ahead if they all stick together, so she'll remain here for now.

Humble Beginnings 10/25/24

By the end of spring, the Baxter twins have become adults, Bryan will soon be an adult, Emily is a teen, and the new baby, Rose, is a child.  Karen, Sarah, and Steven are all about a week out from elderhood.  They had some struggles this spring, though they were mostly due to living on an apartment lot.  First off, someone built and then destroyed a snowman near the bathing area, preventing anyone from accessing the tub/shower.  I couldn't move it because it was in the communal area, so they just had to wait until it melted.  Homework was an ongoing battle, with so many kids needing to take turns doing it, and the toilet needing to be picked up as well.  Also, having moved the new family into the adjacent unit, they were constantly suffering needs failures, since there's not enough room for all of them to enter the apartment at the same time.  Consequently, they were often re-routing into the Baxters' apartment and then passing out or just generally being in the way.  Luckily, move_objects does work on sims.  Despite all of that, however, they did manage to save just enough money ($558) to level up to Poverty Class, so they'll be joining the Andrews/Carter family on the motel lot next round.

The Duncan family joined the Baxters on the construction lot.  The family consists of elderly couple Finlay and Greenlee, their teen grandson Dalton, and Finlay's sister Fiona.  They got straight to fishing and planting a small garden of tomatoes to sell.  They also did some begging, but didn't earn very much money from it.  However, in a surprising turn of events, they received a genie lamp, which I'm allowing them to either sell or make any wishes except for wealth.  They, of course, chose to sell, as that's most advantageous for them at this stage.  As a result, they'll be leveling up to Poverty, with $1654 in savings.

What a surprise!  All the families leveled up in the same round.  The next family will randomly be set to either Homeless or Poverty.

Happy Simming!

Humble Beginnings 10/23/24

Spring brought quite a few changes to both the Andrews and the Carter families.  Both Ben and Grace passed away (at 65 and 67 respectively), leaving Paige and Jenna on their own.  However, now that Paige and Clay have indeed fallen in love, and have a baby on the way, the two families have merged into one, meaning they'll all level up together.  The elders brough in some decent money before they died, and once Jenna grew into a teen, she began fishing quite a bit, bringing in several boots.  Travis had a number of successful dates as well, while Clay and Paige continued begging.  Clay was also gifted a computer by a townie, which I've decided to let them use, but not sell.  All told, they've saved a total of $843 after bills, which means they'll be moving to the Palm Aire Motel in the summer, as they are now Poverty Class.

Humble Beginnings 10/16/24

Winter was brutal for the Andrews family, as well as the new family that arrived to share the lot with them, the Carters.  The Carter family consists of an elderly couple, Ben and Grace, and their two granddaughters, Paige (teen) and Jenna (toddler).  (I like the idea of homeless families sharing the same spaces, even on residential lots, but I'm keeping their finances separate for the sake of advancement to Poverty Class.)  At the beginning of winter, some boots were caught, adding to their funds, but once the pool froze over, they were stuck depending on begging and dates again.  John passed away at the age of 70, leaving only Travis and Clay to build the family's bank.  They did fairly well, however, with Clay reaching adulthood and taking over the begging.  By the end of winter, they'd saved $467 - not quite enough to move up, but very, very close.  The Carters did okay as well, bringing in a total of $92 after bills.  (Also, I had them split the cost of a couch to allow for another place to sleep, since there are so many sims on the lot now.)  Paige and Jenna both grew up by the end of winter, and Paige has the want to fall in love with Clay, so that's pretty interesting.  If the two families merge, they might both move up by the end of spring.

The Baxters had a tough winter as well. With the ditch frozen over, Karen took to begging as well.  Sarah gave birth to a baby girl named Emily.  She had a few more dates, but they were mostly low paying. She did, however, end up with another surprise at the end of winter.  The family lost their matriarch this winter; Nancy passed away at the age of 66.  Beyond that, they fared relatively well.  The twins are now teens, Bryan is nearly a teen also, and little Emily is already a child.  They managed to grow their bank balance to $388, so they're at least still making progress.  Unfortunately, since no one leveled up this winter, it means the new family will once again be Homeless.

Humble Beginnings 10/11/24

So I've finally got through playing my second family, the Baxters.  I created a Homeless lot to look like an abandoned construction site.  The "apartments" are 2x1 units with only toilets inside.  I wanted them to look like portable toilets that you'd find in construction areas.  The initial rent was $40, so I gave the family enough to pay that upon moving in, leaving them with nothing, same as the first family.  I did encounter a few difficulties with playing on an apartment lot.  First off, since the refrigerator is in the communal area, it means they have to pay for each meal they prepare, which is very pricey in the beginning, so I had to allow myself to instruct them to fish for the first week, which got them enough boots to pay for enough meals that one of them could gain a cooking point, which allowed her to cook the bass they were catching.  Oh and, by the way, baby bottles also cost $6 each, which I did not know.  There was also the issue of date flowers not actually being left by dates who are neighbors who live on the lot, so I had to familyfunds them the money that was owed.  And finally, there was the homework issue in which kids can't do their homework if it's placed in a communal area, so I had to keep picking up the toilet and placing it in inventory so that their homework could be moved into the actual "apartment" for them to complete it.  Not the most convenient solution, but doable.  On the upside, the bills were extremely minimal on the first day they were delivered, and didn't get delivered again after that.  AND the rent for their second week seems to be $0?  Idk why, but it's a lucky break.  I've also learned that crops can be planted in communal areas on apartment lots, so they'll be taking advantage of that once the weather is better (should they still be here by then).

Ok, so on to the actual family.  The Baxter family consists of elderly mother Nancy, her adult twins Sarah and Steven, Steven's wife Karen, and the couple's twin daughters Andrea and Angela.  Upon moving in Steven began working at begging, Sarah escorting, and Karen fishing.  Grandma Nancy mostly took care of the twins.  Karen almost immediately got pregnant, and subsequently delivered a baby boy named Bryan.  Sarah had several successful dates and also wound up pregnant.  She'll deliver next week.  At the end of week, the family has saved up $244, the girls have become children, and Bryan is now a toddler.  Next week will be winter, which is probably going to be tough, but hopefully they'll make it through.  It'll certainly be worse for the new family that gets created because they'll be starting off in winter, so fingers crossed!

Happy Simming!

Humble Beginnings 10/8/24

I've played through the fall week with the Andrews family.  Clay became a teen and has managed to keep up with his homework enough to score an A grade.  Travis had several successful dates, netting the family some decent income.  The elders both brought in some money from begging as well, bringing the household funds up to $305 after paying the bills.  Sadly though, Lisa will not get to see her family level up to Poverty Class, as she passed away at the age of 65 (I had them buy items equal to the life insurance payments they received and give them to a townie).  (The computer thing became a moot point, as she died with it in her inventory.)  I think there's a good chance they'll level up next week, but John will likely not be moving with them because he's getting close to the end of his life also.

Next up will be the Baxter family, who will be played on a separate lot for the fall week.  Since the Andrews' haven't moved up yet, the only class available to them is Homeless.  Since they are a family of six, there wasn't room to move them in here with the Andrews, so I created an apartment lot that will be able to accommodate four families.  I'm interested to see how it works out with apartments vs. a residential lot.

Until next time, Happy Simming!

Humble Beginnings 10/7/24

I've begun playtesting of Humble Beginnings.  I tried to convert Sim Center South in Downtown to a residential lot, but it did not work properly so I ended up creating my own Homeless lot.  I fashioned it to look like an abandoned public pool.  The area where the pool was is now a fishable pond.  There are two small buildings; one is a restroom/shower, and the other is a "maintenance building", in which I placed a couple of clothing racks, the dresser that looks like a toolbox, and a crib.  There are a couple of outdoor grills, an old-looking fridge, one counter, some outdoor tables/chairs, a park bench, a tent, a restorable car (placed with move_objects), a couple of fire pits, the oil drum fireplace, and various decorations to look like junk/trash.

My first family is called Andrews and consists of an elderly couple, John and Lisa, their adult son, Travis, and Travis' toddler son Clay.  I gave the family just the amount needed to "buy" the lot, leaving them with $0 upon moving in.  I decided to play families for one week each to correspond to crime syndicate payments/property tax payments that occur weekly, even though, as a Homeless family, neither of those will apply just yet.  Since I'll be creating a new family each week, I also wanted seasons to line up for all the families, so I'm keeping the seasons in place for the entire week by setting all the seasons in the neighborhood to the same thing, then changing them each week.  I started with summer for the first week and the next will be fall.

I've played through the first week (summer) with the Andrews family.  John and Lisa have been begging mostly, though not very successfully.  Travis has been trying to get dates with the various women who walk by the lot (I did not give them a phone), but has only managed to score one date, and it wasn't good enough to land him any date flowers or even the note.  I've run into a couple of things that I didn't think about as well: 1. They've been fishing quite a bit (I wanted them to have a way to get some food) but they catch a lot of boots, which I didn't cover what to do with.  I've decided, I think, to let them sell the boots they catch, but to balance that out, I don't instruct them to fish.  They have to do it autonomously.  2. A townie that Lisa met gave her a computer (I forgot they do that) so I have to decide what to do with it.  I'm considering allowing them to use it once they move up to Poverty (I don't feel like it would be realistic to have a computer set up on the picnic table outside), but obviously I won't let them sell it.  At the end of the week, after paying their bills, the family had saved up $94.  (And also, Clay grew into a child.  I have to decide what to do if he brings home any money for good grades.)

Happy Simming!

Humble Beginnings 10/6/24

Humble Beginnings

The premise of this challenge is to play a family (or neighborhood) from very humble beginnings to the height of opulence through whatever means possible.  It is heavily inspired by challenges such as: The Nickel and Dimed Challenge, Rags to Riches, Boomtown, The Prosperity Challenge, The Poverty Challenge, and many others that I’ve played over the years.  I have borrowed various rules/restrictions from these challenges and molded them into a challenge of my own design.  All credit for any similarities goes entirely to the original creators.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, on to the rules of the challenge.  I wanted to make it very customizable, so I’ve color-coded some rules in either green or red to indicate an easier or harder version.  Feel free to mix and match to suit your own play style.  Or just go ahead and edit whatever you don’t like to make it your own.  Let’s get started.

Setup

This challenge is designed to be played as a neighborhood challenge, but you can do it with only a single household if so desired.  Simply ignore any rules that reference interaction with other playable sims.

Create a single adult sim or a family.  If creating a family, roll a d6 for the number of family members, then randomize age/gender of each family member by whatever means you like.  Avoid having more than two children of the same age, as only twins are possible within the game (unless, of course, you have a mod/hack that allows for higher multiples).  If you get a family with no adult, you may create an adult for the purpose of making the family, then kill them off immediately upon moving in.  If your family does have an adult, the only rule is that none of the children can be older than toddler (because an adult at 29 days to elder wouldn’t be old enough to have an older child).

Primary aspirations are assigned according to zodiac sign:

            Romance = Libra or Leo

            Family = Gemini or Cancer

            Fortune = Taurus or Scorpio

            Knowledge = Capricorn or Virgo

            Popularity = Aquarius or Pisces

            Pleasure = Sagittarius or Aries

Secondary aspirations are selected randomly for CAS sims (born in sims can be random as well or choose one of the parents' primary aspirations as their secondary).

Your sim or family may start as Homeless, Poverty, or Working Class.  Move them into their designated home and give them $0 if Homeless, $500 if Poverty, or $5000 if Working.

Sims will age up a day early for every life phase except when aging to elder (let them age naturally) and to adult (send teens to Uni at 8 days to elder, drop them out, move them back home {deducting the free $20,000 of course}, and give them 2 drinks of elixir (as soon as possible – they may not have enough points or may not be in a high enough aspiration), so that their starting adult age is 35 days to elder.

If playing as a neighborhood challenge, play each family for the same amount of time, and create new sims/families at regular intervals (at the end of each week or season perhaps?)  New sims/families may start at any class level that has been unlocked so far.  If you want to make it interesting, randomize which class they get.

General Rules

Since this challenge is primarily about climbing the ladder of social status through wealth, there will obviously be many restrictions on how money can be earned and on skilling, as that’s a big part of earning money.

·         Skills may not be learned from the bookcase unless the sim has a degree (see below).

·         Jobs available are restricted by class/degree (see below).

·         Teen/elders may have jobs (except for Homeless).

·         Only Lower Middle Class or higher may go to hobby lots or keep life insurance payments.

·         Only Upper Middle Class or higher may attend private school.

·         Mr. Humble’s computer may not be kept or sold.

·         No one is allowed to perform music for tips, dig for treasure, or sell crafted cars (they can still be crafted to use, however).

·         Paintings may only be sold if the sim has level 8 creativity.

·         Crafts from the crafting benches may be sold (toys, robots, etc.) and novels may be written if a sim owns a computer.

·         Townies/NPCs can’t be moved in just for their money.  They must become part of the household and follow the rules of the class they’ve joined.  If they have the required entry skills needed for the job they have upon moving in, they may keep it.

·         Pets may not have jobs.  Only Wealthy or higher may breed pets to sell.  Middle Class sims may own pet stores.

·         If a genie lamp is obtained, it may be sold or sims may wish for anything except wealth.

·         Career rewards are not allowed.

·         Aspiration rewards are allowed, but the money tree and the counterfeit machine may only be used by Criminals.

·         You must make a choice on chance cards.

Sims can have relationships with anyone they choose.  When moving playables in or out with one another, their funds will determine which class they belong to.  Handle this however you see fit.  There’s a lot of storytelling potential here – a gold digger looking to snag a rich spouse, a wealthy heir marrying for love, rather than money…so many possibilities, have fun with it.  If you have ACR, I would recommend adjusting the settings to make is more likely for poorer sims to have unplanned pregnancies.  If not, you can do what I do which is always try for baby anytime someone (Homeless, Poverty, or Working) rolls a baby or woohoo want and for the higher classes try for baby on a baby want or according to their aspiration on a woohoo want (roll d6 – Romance only on a roll of 1, Pleasure 1 or 2, Fortune/Knowledge 1-3, Popularity 1-4, and Family 1-5).  If sims divorce/split up, their class will be determined by the funds in each new household.  Again, you can handle this how you see fit.  I like to keep the original sim who owned the house in the house and move the other sim out.  If there are children involved, I decide who gets custody by a three point scale – whichever parent has the “best” aspiration for parenting (in my opinion - #1 Family, #2 Pop, #3 Fortune, #4 Knowledge, #5 Pleasure, #6 Romance) gets a point, whichever parent has the “best” job (subjective, I know) gets a point, and whichever parent the child likes best gets a point.  Whichever parent has the most points gets custody.

Classes

There are seven social classes that exist solely for the purpose of assigning rules and conditions for advancement.  Friendships/relationships may develop across social classes without restrictions – the heart wants what the heart wants, after all.

Homeless:  Sims of this class live together on a sparsely furnished lot (either residential or apartment), perhaps a public park or small shop that has been converted?  There should be minimal shelter, minimal sleeping arrangements, and minimal bathroom facilities.  You should keep track of each individual family’s money for the purpose of advancing to the next class.  The only jobs open to this class are begging and “escorting” (i.e. freestyling for tips and going on dates for money {selling date flowers}).  Only NPCs may be moved in (no regular townies).  Sims of this class are not allowed to take any aspiration benefit points except for the one to assign a secondary aspiration.  Once a family has saved $500, they can move up to Poverty Class.

Poverty:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must buy an object worth $50 to be placed in inventory and passed down from one generation to the next.  This is the family’s emergency fund.  Should they ever have to tap into this fund to pay bills/rent/buy food, etc., they will immediately be demoted to Homeless and will need to move to a Homeless lot.  Sims of this class live in small motel rooms or abandoned warehouses converted to tiny apartments (should be apartments, because they need to pay rent).  In addition to begging and escorting, sims may now work as baristas, bartenders, and dj’s, as well as in the Culinary, Slacker, and Criminal careers.  Barista, bartender, and dj jobs consist of the sim going to a community lot and working at these activities for a maximum of 3 hours per day per job type (i.e. only one barista shift, one bartending shift, and one dj shift allowed per sim per day).  In addition, a sim must have at least one mechanical point to be hired as either a barista or a bartender and to be a dj they must have at least one creativity point.  In order to take a job in Culinary, a sim must have 2 points in either cooking, creativity, or logic.  For Slacker they need 2 points of either creativity, mechanical, or charisma.  For Criminal, it’s 3 points of either body, creativity, or mechanical.  (There are additional consequences with working in the Criminal career.  See below.)  *Note:  Any jobs performed on community lots must be worked around the sim’s regular job, if any.  In other words, you can’t take advantage of time not passing on the home lot and send a sim out to work three shifts on a community lot, and then come home where it’s still 7:00 a.m. and go off to their regular job.  If they do a shift before work, they must leave and go home before their regular job begins.  Vacation days are not allowed.  If a sim misses a day of work, they must quit before the vacation income is paid.  Only NPCs may be moved in (no regular townies).  Sims of this class are not allowed to take any aspiration benefit points except for the one to assign a secondary aspiration.  This class also has an additional struggle – the crime syndicate that has a strangle hold on the neighborhood.  Each family must pay $500/week to the crime syndicate (give a $500 object to the landlord?), unless there is an adult in the household working as a Criminal (teens and elders may work as Criminals, but they don’t qualify the family for exemption from this payment).  Non-payment will result in consequences (see below).  Once a family has saved $5000, they can move up to Working Class.

Working:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must replace their $50 emergency fund with a $500 fund.  Should they need to tap into it, they’ll be demoted to Poverty Class and must move to Poverty class housing.  Sims of this class live in small rental homes (could be individual townhouses or row houses, as long as they are apartments that require rent to be paid).  Begging and escorting are no longer allowed, but all other jobs remain with the same requirements to enter the job.  In addition, the following jobs will open up with the requirement of at least 3 skill points pertaining to the job before being hired: Law Enforcement (logic, body, or cleaning), Military (body, mechanical, charisma), Athletic (body, mechanical, charisma), and Entertainment (body, creativity, charisma).  Sims of this class may also work as employees in sim-owned businesses.  Vacation days are still not allowed and the $500 payment to the crime syndicate is still required (except for Criminals).  Only NPCs may be moved in (no regular townies).  Sims may now take Needs and Jobs benefit points after taking the point to assign their secondary aspiration, but they must be chosen randomly.  Once the family has saved $25,000, they can move up to Lower Middle Class.

Lower Middle:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must replace their $500 emergency fund with a $2500 fund (demotion if tapped into).  Sims of this class will own their own homes (no more rent!), but will now be required to pay 10% of their lot value each week for property taxes (it may be useful to create a “tax collector” sim who owns a community lot where sims can go to give away an item worth the value of their tax payment).  Criminals may choose not to pay property taxes, but may face consequences for doing so (see below).  Businesses may now be owned, either home or community lot.  Employees may be hired from Working Class families or from the townie pool.  Business perks must be selected at random.  Families no longer need to pay the crime syndicate and vacation days are now allowed.  Townies may now be moved in.  Sims may now take all benefit points (still assign secondary aspiration first), but they must be chosen randomly.  Once the family has saved $100,000, they can move up to Upper Middle Class.

Upper Middle:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must replace their $2500 emergency fund with a $10,000 fund (demotion if tapped into).  Sims of this class will own their own homes (they may stay in the home they already own or move to a larger home, as desired).  Property taxes still apply and all other conditions of Lower Middle Class remain in effect.  Once the family has saved $250,000, they can move up to Wealthy.

Wealthy:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must replace their $10,000 emergency fund with a $25,000 fund (demotion is tapped into).  Sims of this class will own their own homes or live in luxury apartments (their old homes will no longer do and they should upgrade to a more expensive house or move to an upscale apartment building).  Property taxes (for those in houses) still apply, etc.  Once the family has saved $1,000,000, they can move up to Elite.

Elite:  Upon moving up to this class, the family must replace their $25,000 emergency fund with a $100,000 fund (demotion if tapped into).  Sims of this class will own their own homes or live in luxury apartments (they may remain where they are or moved as desired).  Property taxes (for those in houses) still apply, etc.

Higher Education

I find University tedious to play, so I’ve made a different system for higher education here.  Uni will still be used as a means for growing teens into adults, but that’s it.  If you really love playing sims through Uni, by all means, feel free to edit these rules to suit yourself.

Community College:  Community college classes are only available online, so a computer must be owned (even though nothing will actually be done on the computer).  A sim will pay $500 per “class” they take.  The “classes” are the special skills available on the bookcase (fire safety, etc.)  Classes will be taken in the following order: Parenting, Fire Safety, Anger Mgmt., Lifelong Happiness, Physiology, and Couples Counseling.  Once a sim has learned all six of these skills, they will have earned their degree and the following jobs will be opened to them with the requirement of at least 5 skill points pertaining to the job before being hired (even if they are otherwise restricted by their class):  Gamer (creativity, logic, mechanical), Music (charisma, creativity, mechanical), Adventurer (body, charisma, mechanical), Dance (body, creativity, charisma), and Architecture (mechanical, logic, creativity).  Additionally, sims with a degree may now study skills from the bookcase, teach children/teens to study, and take vacation days (even if otherwise restricted by their class).

University:  University classes take place in person at a residential or apartment lot that is designated as the University.  Sims will need to move to this lot to study.  The lot can be designed any way you wish, but make sure to put lots of skilling items in the communal area for all students to have access to.  Classes will work the same as in community college, but the cost for each class is $1000.  Once they’ve finished their classes, students will also need to write a “thesis” (a novel) in order to earn their degree.  A University degree opens up all the jobs from Community College (with the same skill requirements), as well as the following with the requirement of at least 7 skill points pertaining to the job before being hired:  Journalism (charisma, cooking, creativity), Politics (logic, creativity, charisma), Science (logic, cooking, cleaning), Medicine (logic, mechanical, cleaning), Oceanography (body, mechanical, cleaning), Business (logic, creativity, charisma), Law (charisma, cleaning, logic), Education (charisma, cleaning, logic), and Intelligence (logic, mechanical, cleaning).  Additionally, sims with a degree may now study skills from the bookcase, teach children/teens to study, and take vacation days (even if otherwise restricted by their class).

*Note: Teens who earn scholarships may keep the money to apply to classes, but must take at least one class.  They may not keep the free $500 the games gives them upon moving to Uni, as they are only going there long enough to age up and drop out.

Crime Syndicate

Sims required to pay the crime syndicate (i.e. Poverty and Working Class sims) will face severe consequences for non-payment.  The head-of-household (oldest sim in the family) is responsible for the payment.  Should the family be unable to pay what is owed, they will pay as much as they have and the head-of-household will not be able to work the next day (if he/she is off the next day – lucky break, if staying home from work results in vacation pay being paid – deduct it from their funds).  The second time a family fails to pay what is owed, they will pay as much as they have and the head-of-household will be unable to work for five days (same conditions as above).  Three strikes and they’re out, literally.  The syndicate does not tolerate continual offenses.  Pay what they can and then kill off the head-of-household.  The next oldest sim in the family becomes the new head-of-household and the count resets (the syndicate doesn’t hold the previous family member’s crimes against them, isn’t that nice of them?)

Criminal career:  If an adult sim in the household is working in the Criminal career, the family is exempt from paying the crime syndicate.  (This sim does not need to be the head-of-household.)  However, there are risks associated with being a Criminal.  Every day the Criminal sim goes to work, roll a d20 – a roll of 1-5=death (the streets are tough), 6-10=arrest, and 11-20=safety.  (At levels 6-9 of the Criminal career it will decrease to 1-3=death, 4-6=arrest, and 7-20=safety, and at level 10 it will be 1=death, 2=arrest, 3-20=safety.)

Arrest:  If a sim is arrested, they may hire a lawyer (if they can afford one) to represent them.  A good lawyer costs $20,000, a lousy one costs $5000, and a public defender is free.  Once they have retained counsel, roll a d6 – with a good lawyer, 1=conviction and 2-6=acquittal, with a lousy lawyer, 1,3,5=conviction and 2,4,6=acquittal, and with a public defender 1-5=conviction and 6=acquittal.  (Author’s note: This is in no way a criticism of public defenders.  They work very hard for very little pay.  It’s a criticism of the system that gives them too little time and resources to do their jobs effectively.)

Jail:  If a sim is convicted, they will be sentenced to 3 days x their current job level, and must be moved out of the home and into the prison lot (you can make this lot however you want, but sims should not be allowed to interact with sims outside the jail except by phone, they shouldn’t be able to leave the lot, etc. – basically just make it prison) for the length of their sentence.  While a sim is in jail, their family may still benefit from the exemption of crime syndicate payments as long as the jailed sim retains their job (remember, they can’t leave the lot, especially not to go out and commit more crimes!)  In this instance, it’s okay to use vacation days, as the prison lot will be getting the money anyway, and it will only serve to (possibly) allow a sim to keep their job until the end of their sentence, at which point they’ll move back home (obviously, they can’t bring the free $20,000 they’ll get from moving out back home with them).  If they’re fired while in jail, their family back home must begin paying again, unless there is another adult sim in the household working in Criminal.  For simplicity’s sake, teens and elders who are convicted of crimes will pay a $200 fine and be forced to quit their jobs rather than going to prison.  (They earn very little money anyway and it’s a hassle to move teens around, so we’ll just say the courts are lenient on them.)

            Job levels:       1 – Pickpocket

                                    2 – Bagman

                                    3 – Bookie

                                    4 – Con Artist

                                    5 – Getaway driver

                                    6 – Bank robber

                                    7 – Cat burglar

                                    8 – Counterfeiter

                                    9 – Smuggler

                                    10 – Criminal mastermind

Parole:  (Optional)  If you want, you can allow sims to be paroled after 2/3 of their sentence has been served.  The chances of getting paroled go down with subsequent sentences.  Roll a d6 – if it’s their first time in jail, 1=no parole and 2-6=parole, if it’s their 2nd time, 1,3,5=no and 2,4,6=yes, 3rd time, 1-5=no and 6=yes.  After 3 times, no parole will be granted as they are obviously a career criminal.  If paroled, the sim may return home immediately; if not, they must serve the rest of their sentence before returning home.

Tax evasion:  Criminals may choose not to pay their property taxes, however the consequences for non-payment are as follows:  roll a d6 – if 1,3,5 they’ve been caught and must pay their taxes plus a 50% penalty, as well as a 3 day jail sentence; if 2,4,6 they got away with it and there are no consequences.  For each subsequent offense add 2 additional days to their jail sentence.  (Many of the most famous criminals in history were imprisoned, not for their other crimes, but for failing to pay their taxes.)

Kidnapping/Ransom:  A Criminal Mastermind may choose to kidnap any member of a Wealthy or Elite family that walks by their house.  Greet the sim and then lock them into the house.  Roll a d6 – 2,4,6=successful kidnapping/ransom, and 1,3,5=unsuccessful.  If successful, add $100,000 to the household funds (deduct this amount from the victim’s family when played).  If unsuccessful, the Criminal Mastermind gets arrested (follow the normal procedure) and if convicted, add 10 additional days to their sentence for the charge of kidnapping.  Either way, release the victim.

Miscellaneous

You may need to create a sim at some point to be a foster parent to children whose parents are in jail or you could use a family you already have in play.

When a parent is released from jail, perhaps they should be required to take a parenting class before getting their kids back?  Or if one of their kids ages out of the system before they get out, perhaps they will take the parenting class and take on raising their siblings?  Possibilities to consider.

What about a homeless shelter?  Maybe wealthier families could donate funds to build one?  Or taxes could fund it?

These are just some ideas that you could put into place.  Feel free to do whatever you’d like with this challenge, including editing it as much as you like to suit your own play style.  Most importantly….have fun!!!
